BHP Shareholders for Social Responsibility
Rewriting PNG Law!
When it became clear that land owners down stream of the Ok Tedi mine might have a strong case for damages against Ok Tedi Mining Ltd, the government of Papua New Guinea proceeded to alter the laws to protect the company and its own revenues.
Papers became public which indicated that BHP's lawyers, and possibly BHP itself may have been closely involved in the re-write of the laws. The new laws removed the rights of those affected by sediments discharged by the mine to an extent that would not be considered acceptable in Australia, Europe or the USA.
